4th grade essay contest winners

The Noon Kiwanis sponsored a 4th grade essay contest with the theme question “If you have $100 to give to your favorite charity, what charity would you donate it to and why?”

The finalists, Morgan Sikkink, Amy Johnson, and Sadie Marty, their parents, and classroom teacher, Mrs. Davis, were invited to a Kiwanis Noon Luncheon. Each winner read their essay to the group and received a check for $100 made out to the charity they wrote about. Recipients were Someplace Safe, Lakeland Hospice House, and Lake Region Healthcare Cancer Care and Research Center. In addition, they received a $50 check for their classroom.

It's part of "Pennies for Patients" that's raising money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Kids got to dress up in their craziest clothes if they donated money to the cause.

Students brought all sorts of coins in for donation; learning how to give back at any age.

"Everyday they read a story about a child that's a survivor; it's called an honored hero. So they have 10 of those stories and they're reading those each morning when they come to school to kind of, to remember who they're raising the money for."

So far, they've raised more then 17-hundred dollars.
